The
Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a
not-for-profit educational and service organization that empowers women
to succeed and advance in the field of engineering, and to be recognized
for their life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders. Founded
in 1950, SWE is the driving force that establishes engineering as a
highly desirable career for women through an exciting array of training
and development programs, networking opportunities, scholarships,
outreach and advocacy activities, and much more. SWE represents over
19,000 members in 90 professional sections and over 300 collegiate
sections.
The SWE section at the
State University of New York at New Paltz, was founded in 2007 by
Christina Apatow. This section has grown from having no members,
to being one of the leading organizations in the School of Science and
Engineering.
With a variety of on and off-campus activities, New Paltz SWE has
brought together both men and women to pursue one common goal: the
advocacy and support of women in the science and engineering fields.
Inspiring young girls at Engineering Day, in local schools, and other
places in the community is just a start. We also hope that our
involvement in the creation of a Solar Car will also help spark
interest in the science fields.
To say the least, SWE is
an extremely active organization. To begin with, SWE had the unique
opportunity to have a private tour of the
Orange County Choppers
facilities (as seen on Discovery Channel's "American Chopper"). In
addition, there have been fieldtrips to the Panasonic Plasma Display
Laboratory of America, IBM Fishkill, hosted four seminars, and more!
This is all in TWO semesters of being an established organization!
SWE offers a variety of
opportunities to network with professionals and other students, build
resumes, learn proper etiquette, socialize and become part of the
engineering community. To learn more about the benefits of
becoming an official SWE member at the national level, visit "Why
Join SWE". Be sure to look out for our upcoming events/seminars.
